Internet Fusion Group (IFG) is going the extra mile and blazing the

fast-expanding online retail business with a portfolio of niche brands

With over 375,000 required orders to pack and ship, a number increasing yearly, Internet Fusion Group required an innovative automated packaging solution that was reliable, eco-friendly and could grow with their rapidly expanding business. “We are very much front runners on sustainability and packaging,” said Adam Hall, head of sustainability at Internet Fusion Group. “Across the group, our packaging is 91% plastic-free and next year, that percentage figure will look even better.”
Pursuing its drive for increased sustainability and productivity, the retailer invested in two CVP Automated Packaging Solutions, an in-line auto-boxer that measures, constructs, tapes, weighs and labels single and multi-item orders in one seamless process. This proven technology generates highly-effective packaging every seven seconds with one operator and optimizes all steps of parcel fulfillment while saving on labor, shipping and material costs.
“The first rule of sustainability is reduce, and when you reduce, you save money as well,” said Hall. “In terms of shipping volumes, our calculations indicate that the two machines will offer a reduction of 92 truck loads a year, due to the space savings of fit-to-size packaging. So that’s 92 fewer trucks on the road.” In addition, Internet Fusion Group no longer requires void fill on 80% of their products, has reduced corrugate usage by 11,000 m3 (almost 38,000 ft3) annually and will save 5,600 trees a year. The cost savings in terms of lower shipping volumes and materials are significant, which together with freed-up labor resources, offers a fast ROI and lower CO2 emissions. The CVP has given Internet Fusion Group the capacity to expand on the same footprint while coping with peak season pushes at optimal performance.
Hall is extremely pleased with the CVP results. “Before we had a series of pack benches with cardboard boxes and gum tape and we used 100% recycled paper void filling. With the CVP, boxes are cut to size, which means we no longer need paper void filling – so reducing resources needed and costs. And the machines speed up that packing time, freeing up labor resources for other activities rather than packing.”
